And on Sunday, they rested…
Volunteer services apparently take Sundays off so, even though we’ve only been here and worked for one day, we were off to see the sights and get a feel for what everyone loves about New Orleans!
We all piled into 2 buses and took a wonderful guided tour around the city. Dino, our driver, mixed together a little history, Katrina facts, and funny semi-truths as he led us through the historic sections as well as those areas most affected by the hurricane.

After that, we went off in a few groups to explore the storied French Quarter. This was my chance to try to capture the local flavor… the characters were definitely out in full force today! I can’t even imagine what it’s like for Mardi Gras!

We again enjoyed local cuisine- an afternoon snack of beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde, and jambalaya and crawfish at the highly recommended Cafe Maspero! A great day, and thankfully an early night… tomorrow, it’s back to work!

You learn something new everyday…
I learned that if you get a butter patty that’s still relatively cold and solid but you want to spread it easily on toast, a muffin, etc., a good trick is to cut off a bit and smash it into your plate with your knife to loosen it up! How have I NOT learned this yet?! Oh, the frustrations I could have avoided…

Love the shots………. and on a purely (desperatley) personal note…… any chance you could snap off and include a few more of the kids? As you can imagine, we all have not seen our kids in quite some time and are desperate for even a little glimpse of them. THANKS!

Looks like work can be fun! Especially in what looks to be nice weather! Enjoy, all!

Wow! … the photography is incredible! I really got a sense of the city in the aftermath of Katrina. The kids must all be deeply affected. And yet, … there will always be the music! … and that wonderful human spirit that can never die.
I am so grateful to be witnessing all this through your lens David. Thank you.

Thank you all for posting!
I know this batch didn’t have many of the kids… that’s kind of how the day went, we were off in groups and I was exploring by myself trying to capture the essence of the city. The rest of the trip we’ll all be together and the photos will be more kid-centric!
