Twin Cities to New Orleans. 3.5 hours in the air. No sweat. Yeah, right!
My day began at 4 am when my teething, one-year-old son decided that since he was up, everyone else in the house should be too! After getting him out the door to daycare and finally focusing on myself, I scrambled to get my travel documents together before leaving for the airport in rush hour traffic. Of course, I needed to pad my lead time to my first flight by 1.5 hours due to the TSA’s ridiculous “security” measures. Once I arrived at the airport, Murphy’s Law kicked in and my flight was delayed… but at least I had a 3 hour layover before my next flight… which was also delayed
I eventually made it safely to New Orleans… late, but safe. Which got me thinking…
As I sat on my layover in the DFW airport, I actually contemplated the virtues of driving from the Twin Cities to New Orleans instead. I thought of the scenery I would have taken in, the alone time I could have savored, and the podcasts and audiobooks I could have torn through… all of which would have taken me just a few hours longer than I spent awake anyway today. Maybe next time…
But, you can’t really feel too bad for me. I wasn’t traveling with twenty-some teenagers!
That trip had its own issues, including delayed flights, and last minute additions. But eventually everyone arrived safely, got checked-in and settled, and enjoyed a late dinner/quick organizational meeting to get ready for tomorrow’s events. That’s when the real fun begins, and I can’t wait! I’ll have pictures to post tomorrow… the truth is, it’s been a long day, and I need to rest.
Good night!

You learn something new everyday…
I learned that despite a short travel air time and a brief itinerary, there are seemingly dozens of factors conspiring against you meeting those goals… and they usually win.
To be honest, I already knew that. But I was reminded in dramatic fashion today, and I’m fairly certain I will never underestimate potential travel hazards again!

Thank you, Dave K!
My son, Tim, is one of those 26+/- students from Hyde Schools (Woodstock) in NO with you for the first time.
I was, there once upon a time, post-Katrina (conference at the SuperDome) and look forward to all your pictures! Besides, it will be interesting to be a voyeur/a fly on the wall.
Peace, Malissa H

Oops! Correction: Once upon a time was PRE-Katrina; 1988-ish.
