… well, then, you’ll need some photos of children!
Most of my inspiration for this business came from the photos I’ve taken of my son. I received incredibly positive feedback and began to realize I actually had what it takes! But, something told me that a portfolio filled with just my son wouldn’t engender too many clients… go figure!
Luckily, I have a rather large network of family and friends with kids of all ages, most of whom are willing to let their children be my guinea pigs as I build out a portfolio. So, it started with my niece and nephew.
Last weekend, I spent a couple hours following these two around their house as they tried on different hats, pickled their thumbs, showed off their train set, and were otherwise your typical toddlers! I had a great time, and I learned a lot!

For my nephew, I found that Matt Kloskowski’s Vintage New York Lightroom preset really worked well. And, how fitting, since he donned a Yankees cap for a few of the shots!

Unfortunately, I didn’t take any of the two of them together, which is definitely something I’ll remember to do in the future. And something tells me I’ll be back there again to get more of these cuties!

Hi,
I am an old High School classmate of your wife & linked up to your sight after looking at her FB page.

Hi Rachel, good to see FB working on getting my name out there!
As for what lenses I use, the two of mine that I tend to use most right now are the Tamron 17 – 50mm f2.8, and the Nikon 50mm f1.8. I’m a big fan of shallow depth of field, so large apertures are a necessity. The added benefit, of course, is faster shutter speeds that are often needed with kids that are always on the move…
Hope that helps!
